What is Symmastia?
SYMMASTIA:
Symmastia occurs as a result of over dissection of tissues in the cleavage area during breast augmentation. Some surgeons do this in hopes of creating or increasing the cleavage. Symmastia is commonly referred to as “breadloafing”, “kissing implants” or “uniboob”. In order to repair symmastia, the fat and underlying skin tissues have to be reattached to the breastbone. Often times with sub-muscular implants, the scar tissue is removed from the pocket and rolled up. This gives the sutures something to adhere to. Permanent sutures are typically used to hold the sternal skin down. The remaining pocket has to be sutured as well, typically with permanent sutures, thus providing barriers which will keep pressure and tension on the cleavage area.
